Laws of Indices
This lesson explains the fundamental laws of indices (exponents) used to simplify expressions involving powers. You’ll learn the multiplication law (adding powers of the same base when multiplying), the division law (subtracting powers of the same base when dividing), the power-of-a-power law (multiplying powers when raising a power to another power), the zero index law (any non-zero base raised to zero equals 1), the negative index law (a negative power gives the reciprocal of the positive power), and the fractional (root) index law (a fractional power represents a root).
